Art and Design

Intent

At Brentnall Community Primary, we believe that art is an expressive language that enables us to show the diversity of human creativity. We feel that all pupils should be exposed to a diverse art curriculum to help them be successful in developing their expressive language and helping shape their own sense of identity.

Art is used in many areas of our lives from a doodle on a piece of paper, to classical art in museums. As pupils progress through the curriculum we aim for them to develop a range of skills using diverse materials including paint and coloured pencils, to charcoal. Throughout their learning we help the pupils to develop skills in critiquing art in a respectful way.

Staff use art to both engage pupils and support learning across the curriculum, by looking at art from different times in history, local artists to our area such as L.S. Lowry and modern artwork that uses creative and innovative techniques.

To get better at art, children need the capacity to; be fluent, experiment and be authentic and at Brentnall the intent for our art curriculum is that children leave us with these skills.

Implementation

At Brentnall we hope that at the end of their time with us pupils have developed a sense of creativity, are experimental and are not scared to make mistakes. Over their time with us we aim for pupils to learn to identify colour and technique, explain their like or dislike of different artforms and think outside the box. As well as having knowledge of specific art vocabulary and to be able to use this in a wide range of situations.

A high-quality art education should engage and inspire pupils to imagine and explore art in its various forms. It should take them to new places and be playful.

The National Curriculum for art aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

Here at Brentnall we aim to teach exciting art lessons through; the use of modern technology-where we can visit art museums virtually, a range of experiences from staff and the wider Brentnall community and by taking pupils to see art in person at local museums and art galleries. This links with using exciting topics during art lessons to engage and enthuse pupils. We also aim to ensure that during all practical art experiences children have the opportunity to engage with and develop knowledge of the key components; media & materials, method & techniques, processes, formal elements & principles of art and technical language.

Impact

The impact of our art curriculum is that pupils learn to talk about a diverse range of art from different styles, purposes and cultures. They can explore how materials are used in varied and unusual ways. They learn to interpret art their own way and compare to the artists intentions and then use this to learn how to defend their opinion with reasoning and subject specific vocabulary. We aim to have pupils leave Brentnall with a wide range of skills across different mediums and that they find pleasure in art; be that through mindfulness colouring or sculpting with clay or somewhere in between.
