All pupils at Brentnall, participate in two hours of high-quality PE and sporting activities per week, which is carefully planned and mapped out to ensure a broad range of skills and activities are taught. These sessions are either delivered by specialist coaches or class teachers during PE lessons. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure that all children develop the confidence, tolerance and appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. In KS1, pupils are given ample opportunities to develop their fundamental movement skills and extend their agility, balance and coordination. They engage in competitive and cooperative physical activities through games, physical literacy, dance and gymnastics. In KS2, pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching. These skills are incorporated into competitive games, performances using movement patterns and evaluations of their own and others’ work. Pupils communicate and collaborate with each other and develop an understanding of how to improve in physical activities. There are many opportunities across the year for children to take part in inter and intra school competitions, where children’s participation in sports are celebrated. Children in Year 4 – 6 attend swimming lessons where they are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25m using a range of strokes.
In addition to PE in curriculum time, we provide opportunities for all children engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development, but also wellbeing. The wide range of sporting and active clubs that we offer include: horse riding, trampolining, basketball, dodgeball, cross country, football and boogie bounce.
To ensure that we give our children the best possible chance of achieving the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day, we encourage active playtimes through the use of playground leaders, sports coaches and use of our Active Mile track.
